A Slow Coastal Getaway, Late Summer in Maine
Why September is Perfect for a Weekend Getaway & What to Bring
As a preface before diving into why this time of year is an often overlooked opportunity, it is worth describing the type of getaway described. For instance, our trip to Maine completely prioritized our dog, Hudson, who is often not the center of attention once the school year and work schedules pick up. He is also nearing nine years old and, as my husband says, has played second fiddle since we started a family. We booked dog-friendly accommodations, stayed near dog-friendly beaches, and brought him with us everywhere we went. And it felt so great. So prioritizing family or loved ones, whatever that looks like, is key to being intentional about how to spend time.
The second trick that made this trip a success was being flexible and prioritizing the outdoors and getting into nature as much as possible. We didn’t want to overthink anything or create a strict schedule, we simply wanted to enjoy where we were and breathe in the fresh air of a changed scenery. You might find something special that can provide this twenty minutes from your home in a cabin, or nearby park. Get creative.
And before we get started, I gathered a few available finds inspired by similar items that I packed for our trip to Maine. Versatile, timeless, touch of Americana, but will take you straight into fall.
And with that, here is why September could be your go-to month for a quick family escape.
1. Escape the Crowds
One of the greatest benefits of a September getaway is the absence of summer crowds. While the peak vacation season is winding down, schools are back in session, and many families are locked into their fall routines. This means the places that were packed in July and August — whether it’s beaches, trails, or quaint towns — are suddenly much more peaceful. And although we sought out quiet beaches to picnic and let our family add to its ever-growing nature collection, the traffic even in late August was a consideration. Before heading further north, we did spend time in Kennebunkport. We loved visiting this sweet summer town, and know that we would have loved it even more if we had been able to wait a few weeks longer when the bust season calmed down. You get to enjoy a quieter, more intimate experience, making it easier to focus on what matters most: time together as a family.
3. New Memories, New Experiences
September offers a chance for your family to experience something different from the typical summer vacation. You might find yourself hiking, exploring a harvest festival, or enjoying the golden hour in a way that’s not possible in the heat of July. Swimming might be off the table, but instead, you’ll have the opportunity to savor walks in the cooler air, perhaps wrapped in a light jacket, noticing the early signs of autumn's arrival. If it’s warm, grab that last cup of ice cream. If the air turns cool, order the apple cider or Hot Cinnamon Spice tea. Maybe you’ll enjoy both within the same day. These unexpected experiences create fresh memories — ones that stand out because they are now associated with a special, in-between time of year.
4. A Moment to Slow Down
As the back-to-school season begins and work meetings and deadlines fill the calendar through December, weekend schedules fill with activities, sports, and autumn programming, it’s easy to feel the rush of the fall routine creeping in. A September getaway allows you to pause before that whirlwind starts. Taking just a weekend to slow down and connect as a family can be a grounding experience before the bustle sets in. It’s a chance to realign, enjoy the present, and reset your focus for the months ahead. Below is a view of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, a stop I knew I wanted to make and visit that we will not be forgetting any time soon. Even if you only have a day to sneak away, something like a botanical garden (inside a city or not) provides room to achieve everything that a September getaway can offer.
